Bio'There’s a certain level of depth and emotion that stems from Farafield’s latest track…' – Rural Sounds
Farafield is Liam Bloomfield & Giulia Farag, a Melbourne-based duo composing compelling electronic and neoclassical music that traverses genre, as well as music for film and multimedia. Meeting in 2011 in their final year of high school, they have been in and out of musical projects together since. They joined forces in late 2015 to score a short film and forged a composing partnership that has evolved into Farafield. They discovered through their work on short film ‘Creed’ that they were each able to bring a unique and interesting perspective that surprised them, often sending the music in directions they hadn’t considered. ‘Creed’ went on to be screened at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival & World Fair Film Festival in New York amongst many others and won 3 awards during its screening run. Taking influence as far and wide as Ólafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm and Yann Tiersen to Radiohead, Daft Punk and Snarky Puppy, they began creating neo-classical and electronic inspired music. They explore the intersection between organic, acoustic tones and vibrant electronic production and sounds. They have continued to compose for screen and multimedia taking inspiration from Alexandre Desplat, Hans Zimmer and Phillip Glass, which has worked its way into their musical voice, their work often being described as cinematic. 'LOVELY...composition, harmonies, instrumental warmth, reverb, the works!' – Vincent Corver Nowhere is this more evident than in their upcoming debut album, ‘Silkskin’, due for release on 30th April 2020. It brings together music written over the past 4 years, chronicling their journey as composers over this time. ‘Silkskin’ is a collection of 10 instrumental pieces centring around cinematic piano and orchestral textures, layered amongst analogue inspired electronic production. They have released 3 singles ahead of ‘Silkskin’. ‘Lineage’ merges two distinct characters with a flowing, evolving string quartet and upbeat, synthwave inspired synths in a compelling amalgamation of genres. ‘Though, Upon Reflection’ displays their cinematic influences, featuring melancholic, melodic string sections underpinned by a steadily moving piano. It evolves steadily over the course of its 4:53 run time, ending in a synth-infused climax that leaves you wanting more. Their third single, the title track ‘Silkskin’ was released in March 2020 featuring epic percussion, rhythmic strings and dynamic piano. Three self-produced music videos were released alongside each single. Yet to take their music to the stage, Farafield have been honing their act behind the scenes in their Melbourne studio. 04/2020 |
